I’m Thankful For… (2014 Edition)

Hey everyone.

This last month as been pretty crappy for me. In fact, this whole semester has sucked quite a bit. Still, though, it’s almost Thanksgiving. Which means it’s time to reflect on the little things–and the geeky things–that I’m thankful for this year.

1. I’m thankful that I’m almost done with my last full semester of classes! I have a heck of a lot to do before it’s over, but I still can’t wait. I had to re-do two years of Ph.D work when I transferred, and I’m glad it’s almost done! After this, I have just one more class. But then comes the scary dissertation…

2. I’m thankful that my car accident wasn’t worse. I don’t remember a whole lot of what happened afterwards, but I remember thinking that the front of my car looked really bad. My friend Jack was able to get the stuff out of my car (I crashed out of state), and told me that the entire front end was basically gone. So things could have been pretty terrible, and I’m grateful that they weren’t. I’ll gladly take these bruises, soreness, and inconveniences in exchange.

3. I’m thankful for my convention and internet friends. Other graduate students will know that many of your grad school friends are typically friends of convenience–you don’t have a lot in common, but you bond over this thing you’re both going through. On the other hand, I have my geek friends, who I may not see a lot (or ever). However, we get to bond over all the cool, fun stuff. They’ve also been great about keeping my spirits up through all this crap I’ve been going through.

4. I’m thankful that geeky has become a little more cool over the past few years. I’m happy that I’ve become comfortable enough to be myself all the time, instead of hiding my itnerests from others. Sure, some still roll their eyes at me, but I’ve become confident enough that I don’t care! (Read my article How I Learned to Love the Geek on Superheroesque ).

5. I’m thankful for my Google Chromecast. It was a blessing when I was on the couch with the flu and pneumonia for three weeks straight. Also, Netflix. But I’ve been thankful for Netflix for years!

6. I’m thankful for the skills that I’ve learned from cosplay. I’ve learned so much from constructing costumes that have been able to be applied to other areas! I’ve been able to fix and make my own clothes, fix things around the house, and I’ve improved my own problem-solving abilities. Cosplay is the best.

7. I’m thankful that The Flash turned out so good! I’m a little disappointed in Gotham and Constantine, though…

What are you thankful for this year? Share it in the comments!

  1. I’m so glad you are able to find good things out of bad and still be thankful. I know that isn’t always easy to do. I’m very glad to have discovered your blog this year and I wish you well in finishing up school!
