I’ll say this right off the bat–narrowing this down to five couples was really, really difficult to do. In fact, as of writing this introduction, I still have seven couples. But I will get it down to five, damn it. I have integrity. The title is not a lie.
Today’s Top Five list is also Valentine’s Day-themed (like yesterday’s video game crushes list). I’ve gathered a list of my favorite couples from geekdom for you to peruse, since Valentine’s Day is about love and stuff. The number one rule for this list is that the couple has to be canonical–though it doesn’t have to be a long-lived pairing (whoops, now my list is down to five). The second rule is that I don’t have to get really mushy while describing how in love these characters are. I’m just going to give it to you short and sweet–basically, what gets these couples on my list of Top 5 Geeky Couples.
1. Willow and Tara (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
We all know that Willow and Tara are pretty much the iconic lesbian couple in the history of media–but my favorite thing about them is that they have the most realistic relationship in the show (unless you count Giles and Jenny Calendar, which was never really allowed to get on its feet). They get to know each other slowly, fall for each other, and have a normal relationship (with witchcraft). Of course, there needs to be some relationship drama thrown in–it’s a Whedon show, after all–but I still hold Willow and Tara as a great example of what a real relationship should look like.
2. Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour (Harry Potter)
Okay, this is probably the couple that inspires the biggest “What?” on this list. But hear me out. Though Bill and Fleur live in the background, they’re constantly shown to be devoted to each other, protective of each other, and comfortable-with-yet-passionate-toward each other. In case my constant use of the words “each other” threw you off there, the reason they are here is simple–they’re good together, despite the fact that the people around them (and even the readers) doubt it at times.
3. Rogue and Gambit (X-Men)
Despite the fact that it the most tumultuous relationship on this list, the love between Rogue and Gambit belongs on this list because it is one of the most iconic comic book relationships. Rogue and Gambit start off attracted to each other but a few things–particularly Rogue’s powers and Gambit’s…conquests–keep them apart. Eventually, though, they work through these challenges and begin a mostly-healthy relationship until shortly after they both lose their powers (and then Gambit has his restored). This mostly-healthy relationship is fairly short-lived, though, and the couple has been suffering from a nasty case of on-and-off-again ever since.
4. Han Solo and Leia Organa
The Princess and the Scoundrel. “I love you”, “I know”–preferably the second one. I don’t even have the words to explain why this couple belongs on here, because THIS IS THE SCI-FI COUPLE. What kind of list would this be without Leia and Han?
5. Worf and Jadzia Dax
I know that the attractiveness of this couple in their Klingon wedding garb should put them on this list in and of itself, but let me give you a couple more reasons. From the beginning of Deep Space Nine, Jadzia makes it clear that relationships aren’t something that joined Trills pursue. They’re seen as more of a nuisance or a weakness. Therefore, this unlikely love story between a Klingon, a Trill, and a 300-year-old slug is beautiful. Even when I put it like that.
